A Local's Guide to Buying Cannabis in Washington DC

​Adults 21 and over who are DC residents can apply to register for the Medical Cannabis Program.

 

A healthcare practitioner recommendation or self-certification is required to qualify. The program offers reduced fees for low-income applicants. For more information on applying and the fees associated with the program, please visit the Adult Patient Registration webpage.

 

To register as an adult cannabis patient in DC, you'll need:

  1. A healthcare practitioner recommendation with a date of issuance within 2 years of the application submission date OR Self-Certification for individuals 21 and older

  2. One (1) current face photo, "2x2"

  3. One (1) copy of DC DMV REAL ID* OR

    1. One (1) proof of DC residency and

    2. One (1) copy of government-issued photo ID

  4. Caregiver Application (Optional)

  5. Reduced fee proof of income documentation (Optional)

Once you've submited your documentation, you'll receive a confirmation of receipt email. In cases where the application needs additional documentation, you'll receive an email asking for it.

Once your documents have been reviewed, you'll receive an email with a digital letter. If you submit your application before August 1, 2024, fees will be waived. If you would like a physical card, or if you need to replace one, you can do so for $10.

A Visitor's Guide to Buying Cannabis in Washington DC

Non-DC residents can purchase medical cannabis in DC if they have a valid medical cannabis registration card from a reciprocating state or territory.  A list of reciprocating jurisdictions can be found here.  If you do not have a medical cannabis registration card from a reciprocating jurisdiction, you can register online and pay a fee to receive a temporary medical cannabis registration card valid for 30 days.

There's a fee for non-residents to apply for a cannabis license. The fee is based on how long your license is valid for. The costs for a non-resident's DC cannabis patient application are:

  • $10 for a 3 day license

  • $20 for a 30 day license

  • $50 for a 90 day license

  • $75 for a 180 day license

  • $100 for a 365 day license

Important Note:  While recreational cannabis use is legal for adults over 21 in DC, purchasing recreational cannabis is not.  It is important to follow all laws and regulations regarding medical cannabis use in DC.

Legalities of Cannabis Use in DC

It's important to be aware of the following legal aspects of cannabis use in DC:

  • Consumption: Adults 21 and over can legally possess and consume cannabis within their private residences. Public consumption is not permitted.   

  • Purchase: Recreational cannabis sales are not currently legal in DC. You must have a medical cannabis registration card to purchase cannabis from a licensed retailer.

  • Sharing: Sharing cannabis with someone who is not registered with the DC Medical Cannabis Program is illegal.

  • Driving: Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal.
